The UWSP Men’s Hockey team opened up their WIAC Conference only season against confrence rival UW-Eau Claire on Wednesday Feb 3rd at home followed by a road trip on Friday Feb 5th. Wednesday in the season opener UWSP was unable overcome a early 4 goal run by UWEC in the first period. In the second period we saw the Pointers get a pair of goals as well as one from UWEC to end the second period with a score of UWSP 2 and UWEC 5. In the third period of the game the Pointers were able to score one more time but it wasn’t enough as UWEC scored twice in the third period to bring the final score of the season opener to UWEC 7 UWSP 3. Friday, Feb 5th, the UWSP Men’s Hockey team hit the road for the first time this season for the second game of the UWSP UWEC home and home series. The game went scoreless in the first period leaving the first period at 0-0. The second period started out in Eau Claire’s favor when they scored the first goal of the game at 5:42 to lead 1-0 over UWSP. Soon after the Pointers received two power play chances and capitalized on the second power play to tie up the game 1-1. 29 seconds later the Pointers scored again to take the lead 2-1 over UWEC. The third period went scoreless and lead to the Pointers getting their first win of the season by a score of 2-1 and splits the series with WIAC rival UW-Eau Claire. Next Up:
The Pointers will head back on the road Wednesday Feb 10th to face UW-River Falls and then return home Feb 12th to K.B Willett Arena to host UW-River Falls with a 7pm faceoff set for both games.
